Pensando, pensando...

Acabo de ler um texto, o último capítulo do livro Institutions and the Environment de Arild Vatn. Estou ainda estado de consternacao pela lucidez que ele trata uma das questoes que mais me preocupa: nosso modelo de crescimento e suas implicacoes.

Em tempos que a maior parte das TVs na Alemanha só fala sobre a quantidade de empregos cortados na indústria automobilística e mostra a reducao do consumo como um grande problema para a economia, me pergunto cada vez mais onde está a solucao? Maior crescimento material gerado gera inevitavelmente processo mais acelerado de degradacao ambiental. Melhoria na eficiência da producao acaba sendo equalizada por crescente producao e consumo. E entao vem o dilema como mudar a lógica de crescimento material fazendo a economia continuar andando? Ele deposita suas esperancas na capacidade da humanidade em criar instituicoes até entao nao vistas. No final Vatn deixa a objetividade científica de lado e encerra o livro com uma reflexao pessoal, que achei interessante divido abaixo com vocês.

"If it was possible to buy 'nothing', I thought. If I could buy 50 square feet of no thing, I could secure some space that was free of all this useless material they call things. Certainly, if nothing was on a wall you could say: 'Something should be put there. We cannot just leave it.' Then I could answer: ' Well, it isn't just left. No thing is already there'. I could even go on and claim the right to this 'no thing' since I had bought it. What a marvellous idea, I thought! Then business and environment could thrive together. Business could make profits from making no thing. It would be really cheap, too. It would come in different colours and it could be sold under various brands. Competition could be mantained. What a fortune for creativity! What a challenge for marketing! And I would be happy since at present producing more of this thing called 'no thing' would be about the best the system could offer to the future." (Arild Vatn, 2005)
